This edition of the Arup Journal begins with a look at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre. Nicknamed the 'Armadillo' for its distinctive shape, Arup supplied a range of engineering services including civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, public health, geotechnical, and transportation.
We also explore our work in bringing to life Anthony Gormley's stunning Angel of the North sculpture. Arup was involved in the structural engineering of the body and wings and designed the foundations and 20m deep piling to secure the 208 tonne steel sculpture to its hilltop site overlooking Gateshead.
This edition also contains a look at our work to improve the transfer of baggage between Heathrow's Terminal 4 and Terminal 1. In addition, there are articles exploring the Beyeler Foundation Museum in Switzerland and a look at the use of photovoltaic cells as building panels in the search for alternative, non-polluting sources of energy.
