In 1989 the Hong Kong Government's Port and Airport Development Study (PADS) named the island of Chek Lap Kok off the north coast of Lantau as the site selected for Hong Kong's new Airport. Offically opened in 1998, the airport now plays host to over 2.5m tonnes of freight and 35m passengers per year.
Arup has been extensively involved in the airport's development. In this special issue of The Arup Journal, we explore a range of our work on this project.
We begin with the Airport Terminal Building where Arup was appointed to provide structural design for the visible superstructure and steelwork, as well as being fire and acoustic engineer. We also look at our work on Cathay Pacific's VIP lounge 'The Wing', as well as Lufthansa's catering facility.
Alongside this, we also examine our role in the airport's wider infrastructure - in particular the airport's transport facilities. We explore the development Tsing Yi Station and Kowloon Station, including the development of viaducts, tunnels and other developments associated with rail links to the airport.
