John Martin, Arup Chairman 1992-95, begins this issue with a look at what it was like to work with Ove Arup, focusing on the Kingsgate footbridge in Durham.
This issue features a number of transport focused projects including our work on Bangkok's Elevated Road and Train System, an effort to alleviate the city's traffic problem which has required collaboration by Arup's globally based teams on a scale not seen before.
Our cover story comes from Kansai International Airport in Japan, which demonstrates the close collaboration between engineering disciplines that Ove Arup always sought. The roof structure facilitates the heating and ventilating concepts - the integrated structure and airflow system provides an enormous column-free space for the environmentally comfortable and efficient through-put of up to 25M travellers per year.
In a similar vein, our work on Cable and Wireless' new training centre in Coventry, is an essential contribution towards it being considered a 'green building'.
