In the first issue of 1994, we begin by looking at the definition of professionalism - our Chairman John Martin asks what it means for the independent consulting engineer today, in the contexts of duty to the public, relationships with clients and the intrinsic quality of the firm's work.

Looking at projects, we begin by exploring our commission providing an independent evaluation of alternative options for the development of high speed train services from Valence to Marseilles and Montpellier in the South of France.

In the US, we look at our team's work on the Kaiser Permanente Medical Campus in Fresno, California, which required flexible design for fast-track completion and future expansion - with our team providing building engineering services for this multi-phased project.

In the UK, we explore the design of two new, combined cycle gas turbine power stations - among the first of this energy-efficient type in Britain.

In other articles, we consider the influence that spider webs could have on structural engineering, how lift design might evolve over the next 25 years and our structural engineering work on the Liverpool John Moores University Learning Resources Centre.
