Waste to energy
Waste to Energy (WtE) facilities present a valuable opportunity to reduce society’s reliance on landfill for disposal of waste, while producing renewable energy or fuels from resources that have reached the end of their useful life.
Arup combines our global expertise in waste management and energy to promote and deliver higher order waste management solutions to facilitate healthier communities and environments.
Our team is familiar with the technologies used in the EfW sector and have worked on a large number of facilities across the project life cycle around the world. We provide technical, policy and advisory based services to clients across the planning, development, construction, commissioning, operation, acquisition and sale of biomass and thermal generation assets globally.
Our waste and energy experts are supported by our global, multidisciplinary team to identify risks and opportunities throughout the project delivery. Our policy expertise coupled with our technical and commercial capability give us the skills to deliver EfW projects successfully.
Our services range from feasibility and planning through to design and development, owners engineer and construction supervision, as well as transactional advisory and asset management support.

With more than forty years of unmanaged waste piling up next to the Danube, Belgrade’s only landfill Vinca has been listed among the world’s top 50 most polluted dumpsites by the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA).
Arup was appointed by Beo Clean Energy to carry out an independent Social and Environmental audit on behalf of funders European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank group.
The existing landfill will be redeveloped to comply with sanitary and safety standards over the next four years. Since work began in August 2019, our team has provided site supervision and monitoring services to ensure the implementation of the different social and environmental measures set out in the project plan, including work to prevent further contamination of the Danube river basin and its groundwater by creating compartmentalised areas to store different types of hazardous waste.
