Sports venue optimisation
Sports venues and the needs of their surroundings evolve over time – be that to host an event, or to respond to the demands of the market at a particular point in time.
Changing expectations from visitors and participants are one driver, the city’s wider development will also lead to changing priorities and opportunities over time.
Our teams work with venue owners, operators, and management teams to optimise their use during their lifetime – reviewing core infrastructure to extend its life, but also working to make venues more sustainable both environmentally and commercially.
We work with event organisers and sports governing bodies to assess the spatial arrangement and technical systems of venues – helping identify how existing venues can be modified to host some of the world most high profile major events.
The Pan American Games are the second largest multi-sport event in the world. The Games bring together athletes representing 41 countries from North and South America, in 39 sports. The Parapan American games which followed, included 33 countries in 17 sports.
In July 2019, Lima hosted these games in 37 competition venues, making it the first time Peru hosted an event of this scale. The Games presented a huge opportunity to accelerate the city and change attitudes for the future, through the transformation of its sports infrastructure and governance structures.
Arup, as part of the UK’s Delivery Team, played a major role in helping Lima deliver the Games. This role comprised of two main components; providing technical design assurance for 14 new sports venues and the Athletes’ Village and leading the operational planning and overlay design for all the competition and non-competition venues.
This was achieved by taking a collaborative approach to the project and bringing together professionals with a breath of specialist skills to create a strong, integrated team.
