Rail corridor and precinct masterplanning
Masterplanning is central to any place-based approach. Vibrant and active precincts around stations are essential to thriving rail and transit hubs.
Stations today can play multiple roles for the community that use them – from retail and leisure services through to modal switch to other low-carbon transport modes, stations are increasingly central to vibrant social destinations and economic activity.
Our masterplanning approach helps rail clients to maximise the contextual opportunities and the station’s market value through careful design, precinct masterplanning and effective delivery.
Transport-orientated development (or TOD) continues to evolve, particularly in response to the needs of congested cities worldwide. Masterplanning is therefore a vital part of high-density urban development around metro stations. In major east Asia cities such as Hong Kong where precinct design is often fully integrated with MTR station complexes, we are also working on seamless transitions between the stations and the mixed-use precincts around or above the stations.
The historic Sacramento Valley Station, California, is being transformed into a sustainable and community-focused mobility centre. Set to become the main hub for transportation in northern California, the station is designed as a gateway to the city and a convergence point for all modes of transportation.
Working with the City of Sacramento, design firm Perkins&Will and Grimshaw Architects, Arup helped develop the masterplan of what will be one of the most sustainable public areas in California. We brought a wide range of expertise to the project, including civil engineering, transportation planning, sustainability consulting, structural, mechanical and electrical engineering, plumbing, geotechnics, and cost engineering services. In April 2021, the innovative masterplan for the Sacramento Valley Station was certified by the International Living Future Institute (ILFI) and is the first ever municipality-led project to receive a Living Community Challenge (LCC) Vision Plan certification.

Our approach to precinct development and the realisation of value along rail corridors is research driven and community focused. By taking a place-based approach to decision-making for rail projects, we gauge every design decision – from the route to station site and design – in terms of its ability stimulate the economy, connect people, and improve life in both the cities and beyond.
