Mining sustainability and ESG
There is increasing pressure on mining companies to meet regulatory and compliance requirements, and ambitious investor-driven ESG targets are being set.
While it is early days in the mining industry’s transition to more sustainable practices, many have made clear decarbonisation commitments that they will need help to achieve in practice.
We recognise that resources are critical to humanity, and as we decarbonise and increase wealth across our planet, we will be increasingly commodity intensive. Therefore, it is also critical that resources are extracted, produced and consumed in a sustainable manner. Globally, the mining and metals industry are directly responsible for approximately 4-7% of global GHG emission, while indirectly they are responsible for significantly more.
In Australia, taking coal out of our energy equation requires rethinking the future of both the assets and their communities. We studied how the transition away from coal could serve community needs and create new economic opportunities through adaptive reuse of mines.
Key findings included:
-
To successfully pull out of coal, it’s critical to fully understand the possibilities and benefits for both the mining sites and the mining communities.
-
There are ever-increasing global precedents for the successful transition of old coal-fired power stations and mines into new functional entities.
-
Successful adaptive reuse that delivers benefits unique to each location combines localised knowledge, engineering expertise, community engagement, and strategic planning.
