Data sharing infrastructure for energy systems
Virtual energy systems require a common data sharing infrastructure. It’s how the underlying interoperability between systems can be established, and it enables the connection and flow of data between energy assets, in a secure and interoperable manner.
When built with common interfaces and interoperable designs, these can then be linked between organisations, to solve sector level problems more effectively and collectively.
As we have seen in the banking sector, once the data sharing fundamentals are established, all manner of operational and service innovation becomes possible. There is the potential to improve system operation and efficiency, enable access to new markets and support development of new services for a smart and flexible energy system.
Arup has partnered with UK government entities to develop the environment to share data, model and predict scenarios that will support the decarbonisation of the UK energy industry, while supporting a digital-first and sustainable energy network for the future.
In partnership with Energy Systems Catapult and the University of Bath, Arup has been appointed by the UK Government to undertake a feasibility study to assess the viability of a ‘digital spine’ concept for the UK energy system.
The ‘digital spine’ is a concept of technical processes and defined governance roles and responsibilities that will allow the exchange of energy system data in a secure and interoperable manner.
The study will involve comprehensive stakeholder identification and engagement throughout. It will aim to establish the potential scope of a digital spine, the data infrastructure required to deliver it, and provide evidence to inform future policy, regulation, and innovation development.
