Upgrade, retrofit and refurbishment of existing data centres
Legacy data centres are often ill-equipped to manage the data demands and technological developments of today’s digital economy.
If not given adequate attention, this can result in snowballing operational costs, sites that are unable to support increased power densities, an inability to meet sustainability requirements and challenges to energy accessibility.
We see these facilities as an opportunity for revitalisation, turning ageing assets into flourishing ones that operate with increased efficiency and reliability. Our team of energy specialists can provide solutions for alternative energy connections and explore renewable energy transition options to ensure continued resilience and sustainability.
Our approach includes: masterplanning to upgrade outdated equipment to current standards; increasing the capacity and redundancy of operational facilities; analysis and strategies for the resilience of critical systems to eliminate all single points of failure; or even retrofit of entire facilities to maximise lettable space with minimal interruption.
We recognise the urgency that accompanies capacity expansion. That’s why we prioritise speed to market without compromising on the quality and sustainability of the solutions we deliver.
Following an energy utilisation feasibility report by Arup, EMC2 decided to undertake a full retrofit project to implement energy saving technologies at the information technology and data centre site in Ovens, Ballincollig, Co. Cork, using free cooling technology systems. The work will achieve annual electricity savings of 13 million kilowatt hours and an annual carbon emission reduction of 7,000 tonnes.
Arup designed bespoke engineering solutions for three data centres, ten ambient laboratories and four thermocycling test laboratories at the facility, with the engineering design, equipment procurement and tender process undertaken in five weeks.
This €2.5m retrofit data centre free fresh air cooling project was delivered on time, within budget and to the highest standard in collaboration with the EMC2 project team.
