Broadcast studios
At Arup we have more than 25 years of experience in designing state-of-the-art broadcast studios.
We provide multi-disciplinary consultancy services in all aspects of studio design, combining traditional design and engineering with specialist services, such as studio planning, acoustics and lighting. Our integrated approach, drawing on Arup’s spectrum of engineering expertise, aims to deliver the best-possible broadcasting environment, optimised for operational performance and efficiency, flexibility and sustainability.
Arup has designed some of the world’s leading studio environments. Our Sky Studios project is, within its field, one of the most sustainable broadcasting studios ever designed. BSkyB’s brief for a world-leading, genuinely sustainable HQ challenged Arup architects and engineers to capture every viable natural resource on the site and radically minimise energy use throughout. This radical energy reduction agenda included developing a natural ventilation system that allows air in without noise, creating a fresh internal environment for users. Our acoustics specialists helped to ensure that the design will control noise intrusion from nearby vehicles and planes on their descent into Heathrow airport.
Our global studio portfolio includes projects in the UK, Malaysia, Australia and Singapore and for clients including Pinewood, Longcross Studios, Sky and Sunset Studios. Our track record in studio design spans film, television, radio and web-based broadcasting, and includes work with leading architects, developers and broadcasters on both new build and refurbishment projects.
Sky’s brief for a world-leading, sustainable HQ challenged our architects to capture every viable natural resource on site and to radically minimise energy use throughout the facility. Arup’s interest in whole-life sustainability focuses on the human experience of a building. This philosophy has led directly to creating a highly effective and flexible layout at Harlequin 1, that is in keeping with the working culture at BSkyB.
The building’s architecture excitingly expresses the integrated and world-leading sustainable technology. The natural ventilation chimneys of the recording studios are revealed on the exterior of Sky Studios, which some have likened to a new power station architecture of the 21st century.
Sky Studios is the most sustainable and technologically advanced broadcasting studio and data-centre building of its kind.
