Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are rechargeable batteries that can store energy from variable energy sources and discharge it when needed to help balance the electrical grid, provide backup power and improve grid stability.
Arup has combined its expertise in energy and power systems with structural, civil, water and fire engineering to deliver electricity storage projects using several different technologies.
BESS systems can provide a range of services and revenue streams. These include system reliability, network and grid stability, peak shaving and load management, backup power supplies, demand response and ancillary services. BESS systems can store energy for the short, medium or long term. Many different battery types exist with a range of characteristics and applications, which calls for careful consideration when selecting the most appropriate battery for the system.
Adoption of battery storage is being bolstered by the introduction of digital technology that allows the grid to learn about customer use and behaviour, enabling trends to be spotted and pre-empted. Smart thermostats and smart meters, which learn to predict customers’ energy use, are providing information that helps balance load and generation.
Arup commissioned by Northern Ireland (NI) Water as technical advisor and project manager for the Dunore Point Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Project. It is the first large-scale battery to be connected at 33kV in NI.
Together with GRAHAM, Arup provided technical advice and developed techno-economic modelling, planning / NIE-N connection applications, and were NEC Project Manager and Supervisor during the construction stage of the project.
