The Corning Glass Center is the third most visited tourist site in New York State. Challenges with the existing site meant a programme of improvements was required, but delivering these improvements was made more challenging by the need for the cultural centre to remain largely open during renovations.
A phased plan, covering 3 core phases was developed with the third concluding in 1999. The key challenges for Arup were presented by complex geometry, structure and services co-ordination, constraints from existing conditions, phased construction, and the demanding programme.
Alongside this project, we also look at the new Dundee Contemporary Arts Centre, including two cinemas, art galleries, printmaker facilities and research space for the University of Dundee, with full structural and building services delivered by Arup.
In the Americas, we explore work on the new premises for the California College of Arts and Crafts and our efforts to make the building seismic-resistant, as well as looking at the Mashantucket Pequot Research Museum in Connecticut.
