Manchester is the UK's third largest airport and has plans for a major increase in passenger throughput. One way of meeting this increase in demand is by redeveloping Terminal 1 into two elements - a refurbished and extended Terminal 1 and a largely new build Terminal 3.
In this issue we explore how a multidisciplinary Arup team provided full engineering design services including geotechnical, civil, traffic, structural, mechanical, public health, electrical, airfield systems, acoustics, fire, baggage handling, airbridges, and project management on work to redevelop the terminal.
We also look at our work on the new 13-storey tall Continental Engineering Corporation HQ in Taipei, which required us to develop an exposed seismic-resisting system throughout the building's height that would not interfere with the interior column-free space.
We also look at creating a new river-front park in Pittsburgh which includes a cantilevered river level walk plus a ramp which brings pedestrians down from street to river level.
