In this second special edition of The Arup Journal, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of Arup. Projects included in this issue come from across the globe and cover a wide range of engineering and design disciplines.
The issue begins with an exploration of the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. We focus on this vast structure's roof which aims to break down the bulk and bring the edges of the building down within reach of its pedestrian visitors. The design team decided on a roof shape recalling some of the free-form characteristics of the fabric structures that Brisbane people fondly remember from World Expo '88, held on the same site.
Other projects covered in this issue highlight the increasing collaboration between Arup's global practices. Articles include the Oresund Link connecting Denmark and Sweden, the Shajiao C Power Station in China, and the Johannesburg Athletics Stadium all highlight how projects draw on Arup expertise locally and from around the globe to deliver optimum outcomes.
