This issue of the Arup Journal includes an historical study of Armstrong Bridge, a 19th century multi-span iron road bridge near Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

We explore the bridge's design and construction, and also look at the Jesmond Dene Bridge - a bridge that Arup was commissioned to design to replace the Armstrong Bridge - but which ultimately never came to be.

In other articles, we explore the use of coated fabrics in long span roofs, looking at a number of examples where Arup has utilised this approach, and also Poal Beckman considers strengthening techniques.
