How can we combine the next generation of food growing technologies with abandoned and disused buildings? As part of an innovative research project in collaboration with the high tech farming industry, Arup has explored how indoor food growing can give disused structures a new life through a retrofit program.
Framed around four different case studies, this research explores part of the solution to overhaul the global food system and save our current building stock with wide-ranging benefits to our environment, city culture, food resilience and social cohesion. Each scenario looks at different indoor farming solutions, highlighting the strengths and challenges of each to help building owners, designers and decision-makers understand the potential role that disused buildings can play in our society.
