Queer Perspectives on Public Space (2024) presents an exploration into LGBTQIA+ inclusivity in the built environment. Through a global online experiential survey, the research spotlights the lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals in public spaces and addresses a critical data gap.
Participants shared their perceptions of safety and inclusivity in public environments, along with their preferences of public space. They also engaged with a series of 360° virtual environments, provided as part of the survey, and commented on aspects they liked and disliked.
Following analysis of the data, and workshops with our academic partner, key themes emerged, resulting in this robust evidence-based research which is grounded in the perspectives, experiences and aspirations of LGBTQIA+ people.
‘Queer Perspectives on Public Space’ builds on the earlier work of Queering Public Space, as part of an ongoing research partnership led by Arup and the University of Westminster. It offers actionable recommendations, to foster the creation of inclusive and welcoming spaces for intersectionally diverse communities.
