Nordic Innovation and Arup have developed a new technical playbook exploring the potential use of new marine biobased materials for the built environment, responsible for about 70% of total global emissions. These materials – mussel shells, algae, seagrass, seaweed, reeds – offer significant growth potential to support the green transition of the Nordic construction sector.
While some of the materials and products are readily available and present low carbon alternatives that are biodegradable, moisture resistant, and have fire-resistant characteristics – their overall global market share is relatively small compared to conventional building materials.
As an insightful piece of research, the report aims to help strengthen the collaboration and innovation in the region by fostering alliances to pool knowledge, identify gaps and barriers, and consolidate insights.
