Fashion is often highlighted as one of the most critical sectors for its environmental impact.
In recent years many fashion brands have started to develop sustainable and circular strategies. However, little has been done in relation to the shift towards a circular built environment.
By re-designing store fit-outs to better enable disassembly, remanufacture, reuse, upgrade or recycling of components, significant opportunities can be realised for reducing the industry’s environmental impact. The systemic nature of the circular economy requires a holistic approach for the shift towards a circular business model at a corporate level.
This report provides a set of guiding principles across circular design for the fit-out components of retail stores. It also identifies key value capturing opportunities and offers first steps to help drive change across the industry from different stakeholders’ perspectives.
