Efficient building practices that prioritise material reuse are a core circular economy strategy for reducing waste and carbon emissions in the built environment. Yet while this is attractive from a cost and sustainability standpoint, it is often hard to know how to integrate material reuse into existing project programmes and team set-ups.

The Reuse Playbook builds on current practices and establishes the key actions and interactions needed to effectively reuse materials in building projects. It starts by setting out the key personas on building projects: architects, developers, cost consultants and more. It then lays out nine critical actions that facilitate reuse. These are both arranged around a standard project programme so that you can see exactly who needs to take what action and at what stage of the project. The actions are explored in individual chapters supported by detailed action plans.

This report starts to establish the tangible steps and actions that we need to embed material reuse across the buildings industry. It draws on input from across the value chain, including from materials markets and the insurance sector. This level of cross-industry collaboration, along with a clear explanation of necessary actions and accountable actors, is vital to the effective reuse of materials. This will make our buildings more efficient, and more sustainable.
