We use cookies on our website to help us to improve your experience of our website and to ensure that it performs as you expect it to.

Cookies are files containing small amounts of information, which are downloaded to your computer or mobile device by websites that you visit. They can be used to improve your experience of using a website, for example, by remembering your language selection or 'personalising' content based on your location as well as to provide information to the owners of the site.

Cookies can be first party (set by us) or third party (set by another company when you visit our website e.g. Google Analytics or advertising cookies). These are used both for the purposes of understanding user engagement and improving your experience, as well as serving more relevant content and adverts.

Websites must get consent to send cookies to your computer or mobile device unless the cookies are strictly necessary to provide services to you. While the information does not usually directly identify you, details such as the device, operating system and type of browser may be considered personal data as it helps to create a more personalised web experience.

Some cookies are deleted when you close your browser. These are known as session cookies. Persistent cookies remain on your device until they expire, or you delete them from your cache and these cookies enable us to remember things about you as a returning visitor.

Information about our use of cookies

We use the following cookies:

  • Strictly necessary cookies: these are cookies that are required for the operation of our site, for example cookies which ensure the security of your access to our site. These cookies are always enabled because our site cannot function without them
  • Analytical/performance cookies: these allow us to recognise and count the number of visitors and to see how visitors move around our site when they are using it. This helps us to improve the way our site works, for example, by ensuring that users are finding what they are looking for easily. These cookies do not collect information that identifies a visitor although they may collect the IP address of the device used to access the site. All information these cookies collect is anonymous and is only used to improve how our website works.
  • Social media cookies: these cookies are set by a range of social media services that we have added to the site to enable you to share our content with your friends and networks. They are capable of tracking your browser across other sites and building up a profile of your interests. This may impact the content and messages you see on other websites you visit. If you do not allow these cookies you may not be able to use or see these sharing tools.
  • Functionality cookies: these are used to recognise you when you return to our site. They include, for example, cookies that enable you to log into your account on the website and cookies that remember your choices when you make them. This enables us to personalise our content for you and remember your preferences. The information these cookies collect is anonymised (i.e., it does not contain your name, address, account details, etc.) and they do not track your browsing activity across other websites.
  • Targeting cookies: these cookies record your visit to our site, the pages you have visited and the links you have followed. We will use this information to make our site and any advertising displayed on it more relevant to your interests. We may also share this information with third parties for this purpose.

When you first visit our site, you will be presented with a cookie consent banner, allowing you to accept or manage your cookie preferences. You can change your preferences or withdraw your consent at any time by adjusting your browser settings (please see "Managing cookies on Arup.com" section below).

You can find more information about the individual cookies we use and manage your choices by clicking the link below.

Please note that we have no control over cookies set by third parties (including, for example, advertising networks and providers of external services like web traffic analysis services). These cookies are likely to be analytical/performance cookies or targeting cookies.

Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a widely used analytics platform for tracking visitors and their interactions on a website. Arup.com uses this tool to measure traffic volumes and identify areas for improvement. These cookies collect information in the aggregate to give us insight into how our website is being used. Google Analytics anonymises internet protocol addresses, and the anonymised data is transmitted to and stored by Google on servers in the United States. Google may also transfer information to third parties where required to do so by law, or where such third parties process the information on Google's behalf. Google will not associate your IP address with any other data held by Google.

As its cookie is persistent, you will have to manually remove this from your browser. You can either do so by deleting cookies within your browser, or by using the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
